Microsoft's Project xCloud Game Streaming Service Public Preview Registrations Open in Select Regions

Microsoft's proposal of cloud-based mobile gaming will be public soon, at least in the US, UK and South Korea.

Project xCloud signup has opened, and Microsoft says players will slow down during public review. The preview will begin with four Xbox One exclusives: Halo 5: Guardian, Gears 5, Killer Instinct and Sea of Thieves, with more games to be added later. For the time being, no one should buy or own anything other than an Android-enabled phone or tablet, which is currently the only platform for Microsoft game streaming apps. The app will be available in the coming weeks and all games will be streamed via the cloud to the Internet.

"As long as customers continue reporting on a great, fun experience, the review will continue and the technology meets our internal quality standards," Karem Judri, Microsoft's vice president at Project xCloud, said in a blog post.

The question is whether the US has enough wireless Internet infrastructure (or customers) to support this or Google's own cloud-based gaming offer, Stadia. Games like Gears 5 and Halo 5 produce 4K images running at 60 frames per second, high demand for CPUs within the console, broadcast alone - a process that must register user input, transferring that data to a cloud server Communicate, take action, compress that data, transfer it back to the user, and decompress it.

This fact is likely because the project is also being reviewed in South Korea, the country with the fastest internet speeds in the world, and where its largest city is rapidly showering in WiFi. Since last month, South Korea has had the fastest global average of mobile Internet speeds, and as of 2015, the nation has achieved an internet penetration rate of 90 percent.

In early September, Microsoft announced a partnership with Korea SK Telecom to deliver 5G games through Project XCloud. In the US and UK, Excloud partners are T-Mobile and Vodafone respectively. Microsoft states that these are just "technical partnerships" to help with customization and that every carrier service will work.

Only requirements to participate in the review: The phone or tablet running Android 6.0 or higher with Bluetooth 4.0, Microsoft account, and controller controlled by Xbox One.

Coupled with the increasing success of the Xbox Game Pass (a monthly subscription allows you to download the game a la carte), and the introduction of fewer Xbox One S discs, Microsoft is betting on the future of all digital games. Gears 5 was offered for free at the launch of Xbox Game Pass customers, providing the most success with 3 million players in the first weekend of the game.

Kotaku editor-in-chief Stephen Totillo tried the xCloud service wirelessly at the Electronic Entertainment Show this year and found that Halo 5 was "running well" and that when you're away from the console, for a game There seems to be a viable way to sign up. But not enough to snatch her home box.
